Vaiko Withdraws MDMK From DMK-Led Coalition After Nine Years

MDMK formally withdraws from nine-year DMK alliance amid internal party dissent.

Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) Chief Vaiko has announced that his party is ending its nine-year alliance with the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, a decision that has fuelled political speculation over the party's future, including the possibility of closer ties with actor-turned-politician Vijay. The decision was adopted at the MDMK General Council meeting on Saturday, formally bringing to an end an alliance that had been in place since 2017.

The move, however, has also exposed divisions within the MDMK. A section of the party, including two sitting MLAs, reportedly opposed Vaiko's decision to sever ties with the DMK. The internal dissent suggests that while the party leadership has chosen to exit the alliance, not all leaders are in agreement with the change in political strategy, raising questions about the party's unity going forward.

Vaiko's political journey has been marked by frequent shifts in alliances over the past three decades. Once regarded as a close protégé of late DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi, he broke away from the party in 1994 after opposing the rise of M K Stalin within the DMK leadership. Since then, the veteran leader has aligned with different political fronts at various points, making strategic changes based on evolving political circumstances in Tamil Nadu.

The latest decision has triggered speculation about whether the MDMK could explore an alliance with Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) ahead of future elections. However, neither Vaiko nor Vijay has made any official announcement regarding a possible partnership. Political observers say the discussions remain speculative at this stage, with the MDMK expected to assess its electoral strategy after formally exiting the DMK-led alliance.

The MDMK's withdrawal marks another significant development in Tamil Nadu's shifting political landscape as parties begin positioning themselves ahead of upcoming electoral contests. Whether Vaiko chooses to forge a new alliance or contest independently is expected to become clearer in the coming months, as negotiations among regional parties gather pace.
