UP Speaker Satish Mahana Responds to Digvijaya Singh's Refund Demand

UP Speaker offers to refund Digvijaya Singh's disputed Ram Temple donation.

Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Satish Mahana on Wednesday criticised Congress leader Digvijaya Singh over his demand for the return of his donation made for the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. Mahana said those who had contributed with genuine faith could see the grand temple built with their donations, while only those asking for refunds were alleging theft. His remarks came amid an ongoing political exchange over allegations of corruption linked to the Ram Temple project.

Responding to Singh's recent comments, Mahana said he was willing to arrange for the Congress leader's donation to be returned if that was what he wanted. He asserted that allegations of theft or corruption should not be used to undermine the Ram Temple movement, which he described as a matter of faith for millions of devotees. Mahana maintained that those who contributed with devotion had witnessed the successful construction of the temple and had no reason to question the project.

The controversy began after Digvijaya Singh claimed earlier this month that he had sought the return of his donation so that he could instead contribute the amount to the Ramalaya Trust. Singh alleged that his faith had been hurt by what he described as corruption in connection with the Ram Temple project in Ayodhya. He also announced plans to undertake a "non-political" padyatra from the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain to the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, beginning on October 2.

Singh's remarks have triggered strong reactions from BJP leaders, who have rejected the allegations and defended both the temple project and the trust associated with it. The BJP has maintained that the construction of the Ram Temple represents the fulfilment of a long-standing public and religious aspiration and has accused opposition leaders of attempting to politicise an issue closely linked to the sentiments of millions of people across the country.

The Ram Temple in Ayodhya remains one of the BJP's most significant political and cultural achievements and continues to be a subject of intense public and political discussion. Allegations relating to the project have repeatedly led to sharp exchanges between the ruling party and the opposition, with each side accusing the other of attempting to influence public opinion through the issue. The latest dispute has once again brought the temple project into the centre of political debate.

As the war of words continues, both the BJP and the Congress have stood by their respective positions. While Digvijaya Singh has reiterated his concerns and announced his proposed march to Ayodhya, BJP leaders have dismissed the allegations and defended the integrity of the Ram Temple project. The issue is expected to remain a prominent political talking point in the coming months as both parties continue to exchange criticism over the matter.
