Uncertainty Grips TN as TVK and AMMK Trade Blows Over Crucial Letter of Support

TVK and AMMK clash over alleged forged support letter.

A fresh political controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu following competing claims between Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) over a letter of support submitted to the Governor, intensifying uncertainty over government formation in the hung Assembly. The dispute centres on a document reportedly submitted by TVK to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, claiming support from AMMK’s lone MLA-elect Kamaraj for forming a government led by TVK president C. Joseph Vijay. TVK, which is currently one seat short of the 118-mark majority in the 234-member Assembly, has been actively seeking external backing to stake its claim to power.

AMMK General Secretary TTV Dhinakaran, however, strongly rejected the authenticity of the letter, calling it a case of “forgery” and alleging “horse trading” attempts involving rival political forces. He maintained that his party’s lone MLA remains aligned with the NDA and AIADMK alliance, not TVK, and insisted that no such official support had been authorised.

The controversy escalated after the Governor’s office reportedly received conflicting representations regarding the MLA’s political alignment. While TVK asserted that it had secured written backing, AMMK countered that the document was either misrepresented or fabricated, triggering a sharp exchange of accusations between the two parties.

TVK responded by rejecting AMMK’s claims and accused Dhinakaran of spreading misinformation to create confusion around the formation process. The party reiterated that it had no need to “bargain or negotiate” for support and maintained that its position was based on legitimate letters of backing submitted to the Governor.

Dhinakaran further reinforced AMMK’s stance by publicly backing AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami as the rightful candidate to lead any coalition government formation effort. He also alleged that attempts were being made to destabilise the opposition alliance through inducements and political pressure.

With both sides holding firm to their positions, the dispute has added another layer of complexity to an already fractured post-election scenario in Tamil Nadu. The Governor’s decision on government formation remains pending, while competing claims of majority support continue to fuel political uncertainty in the state.
