Uma Bharti Says She’s Ready to Contest 2029 Lok Sabha Polls if BJP Fields Her From Jhansi
Uma Bharti signals a political comeback, saying she’ll contest the 2029 polls if BJP gives her the Jhansi seat.
Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Uma Bharti has expressed her readiness to contest the 2029 Lok Sabha elections from Uttar Pradesh's Jhansi constituency, provided the party fields her there, marking a potential resurgence after a decade away from the electoral fray. The 66-year-old former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, known for her saffron-clad persona and pivotal role in the Ram Temple movement, shared this stance on social media platform X today. Her announcement revives speculation about her political comeback, rooted in her deep emotional ties to Bundelkhand—a region spanning Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh where she has secured multiple victories. Bharti's willingness underscores the BJP's ongoing strategy to leverage seasoned leaders amid intensifying national polls.
Bharti's storied career spans over three decades, with six Lok Sabha triumphs from 1989 to 2014 across Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh seats, including four from Khajuraho, one from Bhopal, and her last from Jhansi in 2014. That year, she flipped the seat from Congress to BJP, defeating Samajwadi Party's Chandra Pal Singh Yadav by over 190,000 votes, contributing to the party's sweep of 73 out of 80 Uttar Pradesh seats alongside ally Apna Dal (Sonelal). She has also notched assembly wins in both states: from Malhara in Madhya Pradesh's Chhatarpur district in 2003 and Charkhari in Uttar Pradesh's Mahoba district in 2012. Her cabinet stints under Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Narendra Modi's first term further cement her as a cross-state electoral heavyweight, blending Hindutva advocacy with developmental focus.
Post-2014, Bharti stepped back, citing health concerns and her dedication to the Ganga rejuvenation campaign, opting out of the 2019 and 2024 elections. In August 2025, she clarified her hiatus was temporary, affirming a return "at an appropriate time". This echoes her March 2024 reflections, where she revealed initial enthusiasm for contesting but a transformative moment at Ayodhya's Ram Temple consecration—evoking memories of late VHP president Ashok Singhal—led her to pledge two years to the Ganga cause, offering garlands from the event into the river at Unnao.
On Saturday in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, she reiterated, "Bundelkhand is my emotional home. I share a deep bond with its people. If the party asks, I will definitely contest." The Jhansi seat, retained by BJP's Anurag Sharma in 2019 (by 365,000 votes) and 2024 (by 102,000 votes), remains a stronghold, yet Bharti's star power could bolster the party's margins in a shifting political landscape.

Bharti's potential 2029 bid arrives as the BJP navigates internal dynamics and opposition resurgence ahead of the next general elections. Her return could galvanise the party's Bundelkhand base, where developmental issues like water scarcity and farmer distress persist despite Ganga-focused initiatives. Analysts view this as a strategic nod to experience, especially with younger leaders like Yogi Adityanath dominating Uttar Pradesh.
While Bharti's vow concludes in early 2026, her Jhansi overture signals alignment with Modi's vision of inclusive growth. For the BJP, fielding her could reinforce Hindutva credentials while addressing voter fatigue, positioning her as a bridge between legacy and renewal in India's polarised polity.
