Uber Driver Allegedly Manipulates Drop Location to Hike Fare by Rs 151 on Airport Ride
Delhi passenger alleges Uber driver manipulated trip destination to inflate airport fare substantially.
A Delhi resident has alleged being overcharged by a cab driver during a late-night airport ride, raising concerns about potential manipulation of ride details within app-based taxi services. The incident reportedly took place after midnight during a trip booked from Indira Gandhi International Airport to Janakpuri, where the passenger claimed discrepancies in fare and trip records.
According to the passenger, the ride was booked at approximately 12:45 AM with an estimated fare of Rs 420 displayed on the app at the time of booking. However, by the end of the journey, the fare had increased to Rs 571. Assuming the change was due to standard fare recalculations such as distance or time adjustments, the passenger proceeded to pay the revised amount without immediate objection.
The issue came to light when the passenger later reviewed the trip receipt and discovered that the drop location had been incorrectly marked as Gurugram instead of Janakpuri. This discrepancy led the passenger to suspect that the driver may have altered the destination within the app during the trip in order to inflate the fare while still dropping the rider at the intended location.

Further raising concerns, the passenger noted multiple irregularities during the ride. The individual driving the vehicle reportedly did not match the profile photo displayed in the app, and the driver was not using the official ride-hailing application for navigation. Instead, the driver relied on Google Maps after asking the passenger to manually input the destination details.
Additionally, the passenger claimed that the driver could not be contacted through the app’s built-in calling feature and had instead shared a personal phone number via message prior to pickup. The trip record also reflected an inaccurate drop-off point, which the passenger described as a significant red flag. A formal complaint has since been lodged with the company, requesting a refund and appropriate action against the driver.
The incident has sparked discussion on social media, with several users highlighting similar experiences and warning of common scams involving altered routes, false drop locations, and toll manipulations, particularly for airport rides. Many advised passengers to take precautions such as capturing screenshots of fare estimates, verifying driver details before boarding, and promptly reporting any inconsistencies through official channels.
