Two Dead And Six Wounded In Minneapolis Mass Shooting; Gunman Also Deceased

Two people were killed and the suspect is dead following a shooting at a downtown Minneapolis apartment building on Wednesday afternoon, according to police. Three Minneapolis police officers were also injured during the incident, two of them from gunshot wounds, Minneapolis Police Public Information Officer Sgt. Garrett Parten said at a press conference held Wednesday evening. Hospital officials confirmed that all three officers were in stable condition following the shooting.

According to police, a 911 call reporting shots fired at the building came in just after 4:30 p.m. local time, with officers arriving at the scene within minutes. Upon entering the high-rise, officers located victims and then heard additional gunfire, prompting them to move toward a higher floor of the building. There, they encountered what Parten described as a haze that significantly limited their visibility, though he did not provide further details about its source. One of the injured officers was shot in the leg, while another underwent surgery after being shot twice in the abdomen; the third officer was being evaluated for a non-life-threatening injury.

Of the fatalities, one victim was shot and killed at the scene, while a second person died after being transported to Hennepin County Medical Center, Parten said. Authorities reported that a total of seven patients, including the individual who later died at the hospital, were taken to nearby medical facilities following the shooting. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said state officials were assisting local law enforcement in responding to the incident, describing the response effort as focused squarely on ensuring the safety of residents in the area.

The shooting drew a substantial law enforcement response, with authorities from multiple neighboring jurisdictions, including St. Louis Park, Edina, the University of Minnesota, the Minnesota State Patrol, transit police and sheriff's deputies from surrounding areas, arriving to assist the Minneapolis Police Department. Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the FBI also responded to the scene, with FBI Director Kash Patel indicating the agency would offer all necessary resources to support local authorities. Video footage circulating on social media showed officers armed with rifles positioned outside the apartment tower, located near the Minneapolis Convention Center, as heavily armored SWAT vehicles were staged nearby.

Officials urged the public to stay away from the area during the response, specifically cautioning residents of the nearby Loring Park neighborhood, a densely populated part of downtown Minneapolis, to avoid the vicinity while law enforcement worked to secure the scene. The Minneapolis Police Department has not yet released the identities of the victims or the suspect, and further details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including a possible motive, remain under investigation as authorities continue to assess the scene and gather additional information.
