TVK Functionary Accused In Bribery Case While Tamil Nadu Govt Strengthens Anti-Graft Efforts

TVK member faces bribery allegations amid Tamil Nadu’s anti-graft push.

A controversy erupted in Tamil Nadu after a video allegedly showing a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) functionary accepting cash from a contractor surfaced on social media, coinciding with the state government’s launch of a new anti-corruption initiative. The video has triggered political debate over bribery allegations in local bodies, although its authenticity has not been independently verified.

The footage reportedly shows N.V. Veera, president of Mambakkam panchayat and Chengalpattu East district joint secretary of TVK, allegedly receiving Rs 30,000 in cash from a contractor. During the conversation captured in the video, another person is purportedly heard stating that Rs 1 lakh had already been transferred. The recording appears to have been made secretly by the contractor.

According to the visuals circulating online, the alleged payment was connected to the clearance of a pending contractor bill after completion of road-related works. However, there has been no official confirmation regarding the circumstances surrounding the exchange of money, and no formal complaint or investigation has been publicly announced by authorities so far.

The controversy gained further attention as it emerged on the same day the Tamil Nadu government intensified its anti-corruption campaign. The state administration directed government offices, district collectorates, local bodies, and public sector undertakings to display bilingual awareness boards carrying the message, “Bribe giving and receiving is an offence,” along with the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) WhatsApp helpline number.

The Chief Secretary instructed departments and government institutions to prominently display the notices in Tamil and English to encourage citizens to report bribery-related complaints. The new WhatsApp-based reporting system is aimed at making it easier for people to bring corruption allegations directly to the DVAC and support quicker action.

The alleged video has led to discussions on social media, with opposition parties and several users demanding a detailed inquiry into the claims. As of now, neither the Tamil Nadu government nor the TVK leadership has issued an official statement on the video’s authenticity or announced any legal, disciplinary, or internal action regarding the allegations. The matter continues to attract public attention due to its timing alongside the government’s renewed anti-corruption drive.
