TVK-BJP Alliance Talks Stir Debate Over Rajinikanth’s Political Influence
Rajinikanth’s fan influence shapes TVK-BJP talks, as a leader’s remarks spark controversy in Tamil Nadu.
Political discussions in Tamil Nadu were recently stirred by remarks from TVK general secretary (campaigns) Aadhav Arjuna about superstar Rajinikanth, highlighting the enduring influence of the actor in the state’s electoral politics. Arjuna’s comments, which praised his own leader Vijay for political “mental strength” while suggesting Rajinikanth lacked the capacity to convert his fan following into a political base, drew widespread criticism from fans and political circles alike.
Rajinikanth, one of Tamil Nadu’s most iconic actors, has historically wielded significant political influence. In the 1996 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, he urged his fans to support the DMK-Tamil Maanila Congress alliance against J. Jayalalithaa’s AIADMK, famously warning that if she returned to power, “even God cannot save Tamil Nadu.” The alliance subsequently swept the polls, cementing his reputation as a key political influencer among his fanbase.
Arjuna’s remarks, made during a protest rally, suggested that threats from the DMK prevented Rajinikanth from entering politics, and contrasted this with Vijay’s perceived courage to do so. The comments were deemed disrespectful by many fans and prompted political leaders across party lines to defend Rajinikanth. In response, Rajinikanth issued a statement on Tuesday, expressing gratitude for the support and noting, “Time won't speak, but it will wait and give the answer later.”

Meanwhile, the Thiruchengode Rajini Fan Club, led by president Aiyappan, demanded a formal apology from Arjuna. The group warned that without an apology, TVK could face opposition from Rajinikanth’s dedicated supporters during the upcoming elections.
Historically, Rajinikanth’s endorsements have not always translated directly into electoral victories. In 1998, despite his support for the DMK-TMC alliance, AIADMK and BJP secured a majority. Similarly, in 2004, after criticizing him over cigarette-smoking scenes in the film Baba, he advised fans to oppose the PMK alone, yet the party won all five contested seats.
Analysts note that while Arjuna’s comments may have provoked controversy, they are unlikely to significantly affect TVK’s political standing. Without Rajinikanth’s direct participation in elections, his political influence today is more symbolic, reflecting fan loyalty rather than decisive voter mobilization.
