Trump’s 70th Claim: Congress Accuses PM Modi of Staying Silent on “Mediation” Narrative

Opposition counts 70 instances of Trump’s disputed ceasefire credit

The Congress party launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi after US President Donald Trump once again claimed credit for de-escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. In a Washington press conference reviewing his first year back in office, Trump boasted of ending “eight unendable wars” in just 10 months, prominently listing the India-Pakistan conflict. He described the two nations as “really going at it” and warned that without his intervention, the situation could have escalated into a nuclear exchange, potentially costing millions of lives.

Congress General Secretary (communications) Jairam Ramesh highlighted the repetition in a post on X, noting that the count of such claims by Trump had risen to 70. He pointed out that Trump repeated the assertion twice on Tuesday—once in his opening remarks and again during the Q&A session—after the tally stood at 68 previously. Ramesh linked the claims to the “sudden and unexpected halt” of what he termed Operation Sindoor on May 10, 2025, sarcastically referring to Trump as the Prime Minister’s “good friend.”

Trump has consistently maintained that Washington mediated a ceasefire, first announcing it on social media on May 10 last year, stating both countries agreed to an immediate stop to hostilities through US-facilitated talks. He reiterated at the press conference that his role alone may have saved 10 to 20 million lives by averting nuclear escalation. The US President also tied the achievement to his broader record of resolving seemingly intractable global conflicts.

India has firmly rejected any notion of third-party mediation, insisting that engagements with Pakistan were handled bilaterally without external involvement. The government’s consistent position has contrasted sharply with Trump’s repeated assertions, fueling political debate within the country.

The Congress used the latest remarks to question the Prime Minister’s silence on the issue, accusing him of allowing a foreign leader to take undue credit for India’s strategic decisions. The episode underscores ongoing tensions in India-US relations narratives and domestic political point-scoring ahead of key diplomatic engagements.
