Trinamool Will Win All Cooch Behar Seats, Abhishek Banerjee Declares

Banerjee invokes Sitalkuchi, urges voters to back Trinamool Congress.

Trinamool Congress all-India general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Wednesday campaigned in Cooch Behar district, strongly targeting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the controversial Sitalkuchi firing incident of 2021. Speaking at the Sitalkuchi Panchayat Samiti ground, he expressed confidence that the Trinamool Congress would win all nine Assembly seats in the district. Candidates from the area were present alongside him.

During his address, Banerjee recalled the death of four voters who were shot by central forces while exercising their right to vote in the 2021 Assembly elections. “That incident has become a symbol of an attack on democracy. Innocent people had to lose their lives while exercising their right to vote. The lives of ordinary people have not been given importance in the politics of power. The Centre was responsible for this incident and it cannot evade responsibility,” he said.

He highlighted the role of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who visited the area at the time and stood by the affected families. Banerjee emphasized the resilient spirit of the local population, saying, “This land is the land of fighting against injustice. People here have not learned to bow their heads. We know how to give a fitting reply to the injustice meted out to the common man.”

On electoral prospects, Banerjee claimed that Trinamool Congress support in Sitalkuchi is steadily growing. He urged voters to exercise their franchise to prevent the BJP from gaining any foothold in the district. “If you go to the booth on the day of voting and exercise your rights, then the BJP will have no existence here in the coming days. You have to ensure that the BJP does not get a single seat in Cooch Behar,” he said.

He also thanked party workers for strengthening the organisation at the grassroots despite what he described as the BJP’s politics. Banerjee confidently predicted that within the next ten years, the BJP would be virtually absent from the area.

The campaign underscores the high-stakes political contest in Cooch Behar, where Trinamool Congress is seeking to consolidate its position against a resurgent BJP, appealing to voters through both local grievances and broader political narratives.
