Trinamool Congress Rebukes PM Modi’s Bihar-Bengal Remark, Accuses BJP of Insulting Bengal’s Identity
TMC rejects BJP’s West Bengal victory claims, vows to defend state politics.
Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent remarks celebrating the BJP’s sweeping Bihar election victory as a precursor to triumph in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has strongly countered the claims, asserting that the people of Bengal will never accept the BJP. Speaking in response to Modi’s statement that “the river Ganga flows to Bengal via Bihar, paving the way for our victory,” TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sagarika Ghose accused the BJP of treating Bengal as a mere prize to be added to its list of conquests.
Ghose condemned the BJP’s political tactics, accusing it of using “saam, daam, dand, bhed” — a fourfold strategy involving persuasion, bribes, intimidation, and division — to seize power by any means necessary. She highlighted the stark contrast between the BJP’s approach and that of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, describing Mamata as a leader deeply connected to the grassroots, tirelessly working for women’s welfare and political empowerment through programs like Kanyashree.
The TMC leader also criticized the central government for allegedly denying Bengal its rightful funds and engaging in "dirty politics of divide and rule," including branding Bengali-speaking migrant workers as “infiltrators.” Ghose accused the BJP of repeatedly insulting Bengal’s language, culture, and historic icons, declarations she said would not be tolerated. “We are the children of Vivekananda, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Rabindranath Tagore. We will fight you and we will win. Jai Bangla,” she declared emphatically.

The BJP’s praises of its Bihar sweep come ahead of West Bengal’s assembly elections next year, where the party aims to improve on its 77-seat tally from 2021. However, the TMC remains confident that the BJP’s narrative and divisive politics will falter before the resilient spirit and cultural pride of Bengal’s electorate.
