TNPDCL Announces Major Rs 7.5 Crore Electricity Upgrade in Rural Tiruchy

New substations to strengthen rural power supply and reliability.

The Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) has unveiled plans for major power infrastructure projects worth Rs 7.5 crore in Tiruchy’s rural belts. These initiatives are aimed at addressing the rising electricity demand across agricultural and interior villages in Musiri and Thuraiyur blocks, where farming activity and household consumption have surged in recent years. The projects include the construction of new 33/11 kV substations at O Krishnapuram and Valasiramani, along with capacity enhancement works at the existing Melakothampatty substation, which together are expected to improve the overall reliability and stability of the power grid in these regions.

The O Krishnapuram substation in Thuraiyur is planned at an estimated cost of Rs 2.32 crore and will feature a 1x8 MVA transformer. Officials said this facility will help stabilise voltage levels and improve the consistency of power supply to nearby villages. By strengthening local infrastructure, the substation will support not only residential electricity needs but also critical agricultural operations, such as irrigation pumps, which are essential for sustaining crop productivity in these rural areas.

At Valasiramani in Musiri block, a larger substation project worth Rs 3.87 crore is set to include two 8 MVA transformer units. This facility will meet the growing power requirements of surrounding communities, particularly farmers who rely heavily on a reliable electricity supply for irrigation, cold storage, and other agricultural machinery. TNPDCL officials noted that the new infrastructure will also reduce load shedding and voltage drops, which have been longstanding issues affecting crop yields and rural livelihoods.

Meanwhile, the existing Melakothampatty substation in Thuraiyur will undergo a significant capacity upgrade. Currently operating with 2x5 MVA transformers, the substation will be enhanced to 2x8 MVA units at a cost of Rs 1.67 crore. The upgrade aims to reduce transmission losses and prevent voltage fluctuations, ensuring a smoother and more efficient power supply to the interior agricultural zones. This modernization is expected to benefit not just farmers but also small industries and households in the area, contributing to the district’s overall economic growth.

A senior TNPDCL official emphasized that the expansion is designed to support the rising agricultural power demand in remote villages. “The installation of additional transformers will help meet the increasing load and ensure uninterrupted electricity to farmlands, homes, and community facilities,” the official said. With tenders for the substation projects recently floated, authorities expect construction work to commence within a month once suitable contractors are selected, promising a stronger and more reliable power network for Tiruchy’s rural communities.
