TMC’s Kalyan Banerjee Quits Amid Party Rift!
TMC’s Kalyan Banerjee resigns as Lok Sabha Chief Whip amid party tensions
Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee announced his resignation as the party’s chief whip in the Lok Sabha on Monday, following a virtual meeting chaired by TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The four-term Sreerampur MP, a prominent advocate, attributed his decision to step down to criticism from Mamata regarding a lack of coordination among TMC MPs. “Didi said there’s a lack of coordination, so the blame is on me. Hence, I have decided to step down,” Banerjee told a news channel.
The resignation comes amid ongoing friction within the TMC, particularly Banerjee’s public disputes with fellow MPs. His high-profile spat with Krishnanagar MP Mahua Moitra at the Election Commission office in April 2025, where he allegedly used derogatory language, drew sharp criticism from senior TMC leader Sougata Roy, who demanded his removal as chief whip. Banerjee’s clash with former cricketer and Durgapur MP Kirti Azad, evidenced by heated WhatsApp exchanges, further embarrassed the party.
Banerjee, a close ally of Mamata since the TMC’s formation in 1998, has been a vocal figure in Parliament but has faced accusations of “uncivilized behavior,” including an incident where he smashed a glass bottle during a Joint Committee on the Waqf Bill in October 2024. Despite his resignation, Banerjee emphasized his loyalty to Mamata, stating he would remain a dedicated party soldier. The TMC has not yet announced a replacement for the chief whip position.
