TMC Ticket Denial Triggers Protests: Supporters Burn Tyres Over MLA Renomination Row

TMC workers protest ticket denials for four sitting MLAs ahead of Bengal assembly elections.

Protests broke out in parts of West Bengal after Mamata Banerjee announced the second list of candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections, with supporters of several denied leaders taking to the streets. In some areas, demonstrators blocked roads and burnt tyres, expressing anger over the Trinamool Congress’ decision to drop sitting MLAs from the ticket list.

The unrest follows the party’s move to deny renomination to leaders such as Asit Majumdar, Manoranjan Byapari, Kageshwar Roy and Rafikur Rahman, triggering resentment among party workers and local supporters. Some protesters questioned the decision, with one remarking they did not understand what was wrong with their leader’s performance.

In the Khandaghosh constituency of Purba Bardhaman district, tensions escalated after the party named Nabin Bag as its candidate. A section of local leaders and workers opposed the decision, demanding that Bishwanath Roy be fielded instead. They warned of resignations and possible non-cooperation during the elections if their demand was not met.

Several disgruntled leaders alleged that long-time party workers were being overlooked, while leaders who had recently joined the party from other political outfits were being given priority in ticket distribution. This perception has intensified dissatisfaction at the grassroots level in multiple districts.

Block president Aparthib Islam and other local functionaries openly voiced their concerns, stating that they may step down from their posts if the candidate list is not revised. However, Nabin Bag declined to comment on the controversy surrounding his candidature.

The developments highlight growing internal challenges within the All India Trinamool Congress ahead of the Assembly elections. With candidate selection triggering protests in several constituencies, the party leadership may face pressure to address dissent and maintain unity as the election approaches.
