TMC Suspended MLA Kabir Aims Kingmaker Position, Plans Rally on December 22
Humayun Kabir predicts hung assembly and plans new party launch.
Suspended Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir declared on Tuesday that he will become the decisive kingmaker after the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections, confidently asserting that neither TMC nor BJP will cross the majority mark of 148 seats in the 294-member House without his support.
Addressing reporters in Murshidabad, the rebellious legislator announced that his yet-to-be-named political outfit will formally launch on December 22 at a massive rally expected to draw one lakh supporters at Berhampore Textile More. He claimed his party will contest 135 seats and win enough to make any chief minister’s swearing-in dependent on his MLAs.
Kabir, who was suspended last week for defying party discipline and laying the foundation stone for a mosque modelled on the Babri Masjid on December 6, reversed his earlier threat to resign from the assembly and confirmed he will retain his Bharatpur seat while floating the new organisation. He hinted at possible seat-sharing arrangements with Congress and Left parties in Murshidabad and said two more sitting MLAs will soon join him.

When pressed on whether his party will be named the National Conservative Party, Kabir smiled and deferred details until the launch event. He also left open the possibility of alliances with opposition forces but ruled out immediate talks with Congress, stating that CPI(M) state secretary Mohammed Salim is coordinating discussions.
Trinamool Congress dismissed the claims with contempt, with state general secretary Arup Chakraborty stating that Kabir is “daydreaming” and should first worry about saving his own deposit. Meanwhile, Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM categorically rejected any electoral understanding with Kabir, calling his overtures “politically suspect and ideologically incompatible” days after the controversial mosque ceremony.
