TMC MP Prakash Baraik Resigns, Meets CP Radhakrishnan In Fresh Setback For Party

TMC MP Prakash Baraik resigns and meets CP Radhakrishnan.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) suffered another political setback on Thursday after Rajya Sabha MP Prakash Chik Baraik resigned from the Upper House, further deepening the ongoing crisis within the party. Baraik submitted his resignation to Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan, marking the third exit from the party’s parliamentary ranks in just a few days. His resignation follows closely on the heels of two other departures earlier this week, with Sukhendu Sekhar Ray quitting on Monday and Sushmita Dev resigning on Wednesday.

The consecutive exits have intensified concerns within the party leadership, particularly as internal divisions continue to widen. In his resignation letter, Baraik formally stated his decision to step down from the membership of the Rajya Sabha. He is also reported to have met or is expected to meet the Rajya Sabha Chairman as part of the procedural formalities. The development adds to what party insiders describe as an escalating internal churn involving several MPs.

The TMC has been grappling with signs of rebellion among its Lok Sabha MPs as well, with reports suggesting that some members are attempting to form a separate bloc in the House. However, there has been no official confirmation regarding which MPs have signed any such communication to the Lok Sabha Speaker, adding uncertainty to the emerging political situation.

Party leaders have acknowledged efforts to reach out to MPs amid the unrest. TMC Rajya Sabha floor leader Derek O’Brien stated that attempts were made to contact all members, including Baraik, in the lead-up to his resignation. However, Baraik reportedly cited a family health issue as the reason for his inability to meet party representatives.

The resignations come at a politically sensitive time, with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and senior party leaders engaged in discussions with INDIA bloc allies in New Delhi. Despite these engagements, the continued exodus of MPs has raised questions about internal cohesion and the party’s parliamentary strength going forward.
