TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee Moves Calcutta High Court Against Account Freeze

Abhishek Banerjee Challenges Bank Account Freeze in Court

Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee approached the Calcutta High Court on Monday challenging the alleged freezing of his personal bank account by a private bank. Banerjee’s lawyer sought an urgent hearing of the petition, citing the TMC leader’s planned overseas travel for medical reasons and stating that the trip has been permitted by the Supreme Court. The petition was moved before the Calcutta High Court as Banerjee sought judicial intervention over the bank’s action. His lawyer, Ayan Bhattacharjee, alleged that the private bank had frozen Banerjee’s personal account without following the required procedure.

The allegation forms the basis of the challenge before the high court. Bhattacharjee told the court that the matter required urgent consideration because Banerjee is expected to travel abroad shortly for medical purposes. According to the lawyer, the Supreme Court has already granted permission for the overseas visit. The request for an early hearing was therefore linked to the TMC leader’s travel plans and the need to address the account-related issue before his departure. The circumstances surrounding the freezing of the account, including the reason cited by the bank for taking the action, were not detailed in the information available.

Banerjee’s legal challenge is focused on the procedure followed by the private bank, with his lawyer contending that the account was frozen without complying with the appropriate process. The Calcutta High Court’s consideration of the petition comes as Banerjee seeks relief from the alleged restriction on his personal banking facilities. The case will determine whether the bank’s action followed the applicable procedure and whether any further directions are required in relation to the account. Banerjee, a prominent TMC leader and Member of Parliament, has previously been involved in several legal proceedings connected with political and investigative matters.

However, the present petition before the Calcutta High Court concerns the alleged freezing of his personal bank account by a private financial institution. The urgent hearing request also brings the issue into the context of Banerjee’s proposed medical travel. His lawyer has maintained that the Supreme Court has permitted the overseas visit, making the timing of the bank account dispute particularly significant for the TMC leader. The petition is expected to be considered by the Calcutta High Court, which will examine the legal challenge and the allegations concerning the procedure followed by the bank.

Any response from the financial institution or further directions from the court could provide greater clarity on the circumstances that led to the account being frozen. For now, the allegation that the bank failed to follow proper procedure remains Banerjee’s legal position through his lawyer and has not been established by a judicial finding. The case before the Calcutta High Court will determine the next course of action as the TMC MP seeks urgent consideration of his challenge.
