‘Those Inside Parliament Bite, Not Dogs’: Renuka Chowdhury’s Stray Dog Rescue Triggers Row With BJP

Congress MP’s rescued stray sparks chaos and a brutal verbal showdown on Parliament premises.

Senior Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury ignited a full-blown political storm on Monday when she reached the Parliament complex with a tiny rescued stray dog curled up in her car, turning a routine arrival into a dramatic confrontation that left ruling party members fuming and the media in a frenzy.

Defending her decision with fiery conviction, Chowdhury told waiting reporters that she had picked up the injured stray earlier in the morning and was simply ensuring it reached a veterinarian for urgent treatment. Dismissing the outrage as baseless, she challenged the critics head-on, stating there is no rule or law in the country that criminalizes the act of rescuing a helpless animal and providing it medical care.

In a remark that instantly went viral, the outspoken Congress leader launched a scathing counter-attack, declaring, “This government does not like animals. Animals don’t have a voice. Those sitting inside Parliament bite, not dogs.” The sharp jibe, delivered with trademark bluntness, was clearly aimed at the treasury benches and drew gasps and cheers in equal measure from onlookers.

BJP MP Jagdambika Pal led the charge against Chowdhury, branding the entire episode a cheap “tamasha” and an unacceptable breach of parliamentary decorum. He insisted that no member is permitted to bring pets or stray animals onto the high-security Parliament premises, equating it to bringing unauthorized persons without proper documentation. Visibly agitated, Pal demanded immediate disciplinary action against the Congress MP and urged the Rajya Sabha Chairman to take her to task for lowering the dignity of the House instead of focusing on serious legislative business.

The incident has once again exposed the bitter fault lines between the ruling NDA and the opposition, with animal lovers across social media rallying behind Chowdhury while BJP supporters slammed her for allegedly trivializing Parliament. A self-confessed dog lover who keeps multiple rescued pets at home, Renuka Chowdhury remained unapologetic, turning a simple act of compassion into a larger statement on humanity and political hypocrisy.
