Vijay Sets Sights on Ramanathapuram for 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly Polls
Tamil cinema superstar-turned-politician Vijay, the founder of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is reportedly gearing up to contest the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections from a constituency in Ramanathapuram district.
With the elections still over a year away, the actor’s political outfit has already begun laying the groundwork, conducting surveys across multiple constituencies to gauge its electoral prospects.
Sources within TVK suggest that Vijay’s focus on Ramanathapuram stems from its large coastal and fishing community, a demographic he has long championed. The actor has previously addressed the plight of Tamil Nadu fishermen, notably at a major rally in Nagapattinam, where he criticized the frequent arrests of fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).
A senior TVK leader, speaking anonymously, said, “Vijay wants to stand with the downtrodden and amplify their voices. Ramanathapuram, often in the spotlight due to fishermen’s issues, aligns with his vision.”
Vijay’s political journey gained momentum after he launched TVK on February 2, 2024, positioning it as a party committed to fighting corruption and divisive politics. While he opted out of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he has made it clear that the 2026 Assembly polls are his target. His fan club-turned-political entity, the All India Thalapathy Vijay Makkal Iyakkam (AITVMI), demonstrated its electoral potential in the 2021 Tamil Nadu local body elections, securing 115 out of 169 contested seats—a feat that has fueled optimism within the party.
The decision to zero in on Ramanathapuram is reportedly influenced by election strategist Prashant Kishor, who has been advising Vijay and was present at TVK’s first anniversary event in Kancheepuram earlier this month.
As the party prepares for its General Council meeting on March 28, all eyes are on Vijay to unveil a detailed roadmap for the 2026 elections, marking his formal entry into Tamil Nadu’s fiercely competitive political arena.
