Thackeray And Shinde Camps Lock Horns In Shiv Sena Foundation Day Showdown

As Maharashtra’s Shiv Sena prepares to mark its foundation day on June 19, the celebrations have taken on heightened political significance, with both the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Eknath Shinde faction treating the occasion as a contest of legitimacy, identity, and organisational strength. The events coincide with a politically sensitive period ahead of the state legislature’s monsoon session and growing speculation over shifting alliances.

This year’s observance is especially symbolic, marking the 60th anniversary of the party’s founding by Balasaheb Thackeray in 1966. For both factions, the occasion has become more than a commemorative event, evolving instead into a platform to assert claim over the party’s legacy, ideological direction, and mass support base.

For the Uddhav Thackeray camp, the challenge lies in maintaining organisational cohesion and reinforcing its identity after losing access to the party name and symbol following the split. The group continues to emphasise its alignment with Balasaheb Thackeray’s ideology, particularly Hindutva, as a central pillar of its political messaging.

However, despite institutional advantages, the Shinde camp faces the challenge of building long-term organisational depth and maintaining internal balance within a coalition government. The absorption of leaders from opposition ranks and ongoing political negotiations over influence and representation highlight the complexities of sustaining expansion.

With both factions preparing for high-visibility foundation day events, the occasion is widely seen as a crucial moment in Maharashtra’s evolving political landscape. Beyond symbolism, the celebrations are expected to signal organisational strength, test public perception, and shape momentum ahead of upcoming electoral battles in the state.
