TET Qualifiers Protest in Kolkata Over Teacher Recruitment Delay

TET pass-outs protest in Kolkata, demanding urgent recruitment for 50,000 vacant teacher posts.

Hundreds of teaching job aspirants staged a demonstration in Kolkata’s Salt Lake area, pressing the West Bengal government to expedite the recruitment process for approximately 50,000 vacant primary school teacher positions. The protesters, who cleared the Teachers’ Eligibility Test (TET) in 2022, accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government of delaying appointments despite Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s promise that no TET-qualified candidate would remain unemployed.

The demonstration began around 1 PM outside Karunamoyee metro station, with aspirants marching toward APC Bhawan, the headquarters of the West Bengal Board of Primary Education (WBBPE). Braving rain, many carried placards and wore masks of the Chief Minister to highlight their demands. However, police intervened swiftly, detaining several protesters at the metro station gate and transporting them away in buses, causing brief traffic disruptions at the busy Karunamoyee crossing.

A demonstrator voiced frustration, stating, “Our demand is simple—issue the notification for interviews and recruit us immediately. The government has kept us waiting for years.” Another added, “It feels like we are being deprived deliberately.” The protest underscores ongoing tensions, with aspirants citing the WBBPE’s delay in initiating interviews despite a significant number of vacancies.
