Tejashwi Yadav Slams NDA Over Bihar’s ‘Collapsed’ Law and Order, Cites 65,000 Murders

RJD Leader Demands Accountability After Businessman’s Killing in Patna

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav launched a scathing attack on Bihar’s National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, alleging a complete breakdown of law and order under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s leadership. Yadav claimed that the state has witnessed “65,000 murders” over the past two decades, spotlighting the recent killing of prominent businessman and BJP associate Gopal Khemka as evidence of rampant crime.

Khemka was shot dead by an unidentified assailant outside his home in Patna’s high-security Gandhi Maidan area at 11:40 PM on Friday, July 4, 2025, as he stepped out of his car. Yadav highlighted the audacity of the crime, stating on X, “In the most secure area of Patna, criminals, protected and nurtured by those in power, brutally murdered the city’s prominent businessman.” He noted that Khemka’s son, Gunjan, was also killed seven years ago, with the perpetrators still at large, questioning the Bihar Police’s conviction rate and effectiveness.

“If the crumbling law and order and rampant corruption in Bihar aren’t making anyone angry, then their sense of justice and human compassion has died,” Yadav posted, criticizing the NDA for ignoring public sentiment in favor of caste and religious divisions. He sarcastically referred to the government’s “media management” and accused police of focusing on liquor enforcement under the “DK Tax scheme” instead of pursuing criminals.

Yadav’s remarks come amid heightened political tensions ahead of the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections. He met Khemka’s family to express solidarity, calling the murder “heart-wrenching” and alleging that “no one is safe in Bihar” under the NDA’s “Rakshas Raj” (demon rule). Other opposition leaders, including Congress MP Akhilesh Prasad Singh and Purnia MP Pappu Yadav, echoed his concerns, with the latter demanding a CBI probe into Khemka’s killing.

In response, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar held a meeting on Saturday to review the law and order situation, emphasizing that “rule of law is top priority” and warning of strict action against negligent police personnel. The CM’s office stated that investigations into Khemka’s murder are being expedited. Patna Police conducted searches at Beur jail, recovering three mobile phones, a data cable, and a paper with mobile numbers, while detaining suspects and raiding locations in Hajipur.

Union Minister Nityanand Rai defended the NDA, asserting that criminals face “the full force of law” without interference, dismissing opposition claims as exaggerated. However, opposition leaders, including RJD MP Manoj Jha, labeled the situation “goonda raj,” pointing to daily murders across Bihar’s districts.

As the state braces for elections, Khemka’s murder has intensified debates over Bihar’s security, with Yadav’s charge of 65,000 murders—first raised by RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav last month—fueling the opposition’s narrative of a lawless state under NDA rule.
