Tata Tiago EV Booked For Missing Pollution Certificate In Rajasthan?

EV fined wrongly sparks confusion over pollution certificate rules.

A Tata Tiago EV owner was fined by the Rajasthan Police for not carrying a Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate, despite electric vehicles being exempt from such requirements. The incident, captured on video, has since gone viral on social media, sparking widespread debate.

According to reports, the incident occurred when a police officer stopped the vehicle over the use of sunshades on the windshield. What followed was a heated exchange between the owner and the officer, during which the driver questioned the validity of issuing a PUC-related challan for an electric vehicle. Despite the objection, the officer proceeded to impose a fine, reportedly including ₹1,500 for the missing certificate and an additional penalty for the sunshades.

The video of the confrontation quickly gained traction online, with many users pointing out that electric vehicles do not produce tailpipe emissions and therefore are not subject to standard pollution checks. The incident has raised concerns about awareness and enforcement consistency regarding EV regulations among authorities.

Responding to the controversy, police officials acknowledged that the challan for the pollution certificate was issued in error. Authorities stated that the situation arose during an argument related to the removal of the sunshades and assured that the incorrect fine would be reviewed and cancelled in the system.

Under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, battery-operated vehicles are classified separately and are exempt from periodic PUC testing, as they do not emit pollutants like conventional petrol or diesel vehicles. The PUC certificate is primarily intended to regulate emissions from internal combustion engine vehicles and help control air pollution.

The incident has highlighted the need for clearer implementation of EV-related rules and better training for enforcement personnel. As India sees a steady rise in electric vehicle adoption, experts say such cases underline the importance of aligning on-ground practices with evolving regulatory frameworks.
