Tamil Nadu Minister Alleges Paying Bribe For His School’s Approval Under DMK Rule

Tamil Nadu Finance Minister N Marie Wilson on Monday alleged in the state Assembly that he was forced to pay a bribe to obtain approvals from the School Education Department during the previous DMK government. His remarks triggered a political confrontation, with former School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi demanding a probe by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) into what he described as Wilson's admission of bribery. Speaking during the Assembly proceedings, Wilson, who represents the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), claimed he had personally witnessed corruption during the earlier DMK administration.

He alleged that he was compelled to pay a substantial amount in connection with approvals for his educational institutions at a location in Chennai's T Nagar. Wilson presented himself as both a witness and evidence for his allegation, saying he was prepared to provide details of the alleged payment. He challenged the opposition to initiate legal proceedings or an inquiry into his claims, asserting that he would face any investigation. The minister also referred to Global Educational Trust in T Nagar while making the allegation. The remarks immediately drew a response from the DMK. Poyyamozhi, who served as School Education Minister during the previous government, accused Wilson of making what he described as baseless allegations driven by personal animosity. 

He demanded that authorities take immediate action over the finance minister's statements and called for a formal investigation into the matter. Poyyamozhi's demand for a DVAC inquiry could potentially turn the Assembly exchange into a wider political and legal issue. The anti-corruption agency is responsible for investigating allegations involving bribery and corruption by public servants in Tamil Nadu. A formal investigation, if ordered, could examine whether any payment was made, who allegedly received it and whether official approvals were improperly granted.

Wilson's allegation is particularly significant because it concerns the functioning of a government department under a previous administration. However, the claims made in the Assembly have not, based on the information available, been independently established. The dispute also reflects the increasingly confrontational political atmosphere in Tamil Nadu, where the TVK has emerged as a major political force and the DMK remains a key opposition party in the Assembly.

Allegations concerning corruption and the functioning of previous governments are likely to remain prominent issues as political parties seek to challenge each other's record in office. For now, the controversy centres on Wilson's claim that he personally paid money to secure approvals and Poyyamozhi's demand that the allegation be investigated. Wilson has said he is willing to face an inquiry, while the former minister has called for immediate action. Any determination regarding the truth of the allegations would depend on evidence and the outcome of an official investigation.
