Tamil Nadu Mandates ‘Water Bell’ System in Private Schools to Keep Students Hydrated

In a significant move to prioritize student health, the Tamil Nadu School Education Department has extended its innovative ‘Water Bell’ system to all private schools across the state, following its successful implementation in government and aided schools. The initiative, aimed at combating dehydration and boosting academic performance, mandates designated hydration breaks to ensure students drink water regularly during school hours.

The Directorate of Private Schools (DPS) in Chennai issued a directive instructing District Educational Officers (DEOs) to enforce immediate compliance. Schools are required to ring a distinct ‘water bell’—separate from regular class or break bells—at least three times daily, with suggested timings of 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m., though schools can adjust based on their schedules. Students are encouraged to carry water bottles from home, and teachers must allow 2–3 minutes during lessons for hydration without requiring students to leave the classroom. Morning assemblies will also include awareness campaigns on the importance of staying hydrated.

Educationist K. Leninbharathi, a key advocate for the system, hailed the decision, stating, “Dehydration affects concentration, energy levels, and overall classroom performance. This structured system is essential for student well-being.” R. Saravanakumar, chairman of a private CBSE school in Kanyakumari, noted that many private schools had already adopted the practice voluntarily, adding, “This mandate strengthens a best practice already showing benefits.”

Parents have also welcomed the move. Manonmani G, a bank employee from Salem, expressed relief, saying, “My daughter often comes home dehydrated. This step will make a real difference.” The initiative, inspired by similar programs in Kerala, Karnataka, and Telangana, aligns with Tamil Nadu’s broader focus on student wellness, including the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme.

With rising temperatures exacerbating health risks like headaches and fatigue, the ‘Water Bell’ system is a proactive step to foster healthier learning environments across Tamil Nadu’s schools.
