Tamil Nadu Custodial Death Ignites Fury: Woman Behind Complaint Speaks Out

Custodial death sparks outrage in Tamil Nadu

A storm of public outrage has erupted in Tamil Nadu following the custodial death of temple watchman B. Ajith Kumar in Sivaganga district, with a viral audio clip of the woman whose theft complaint led to his arrest fanning the flames of controversy.

The woman, Nikitha from Alampatti near Thirumangalam in Madurai district, is now absconding, according to police sources. Her complaint accused Ajith Kumar of stealing her jewellery during a temple visit, leading to his detention by the Thirupuvanam police. Tragically, his family was later informed of his death in custody. An autopsy revealed severe injuries, fueling allegations of custodial torture and sparking widespread protests.

In the audio clip circulating on social media, Nikitha expresses deep regret over Ajith Kumar’s death while defending her actions. “It is with deep sorrow that I speak out,” she said, her voice heavy with emotion. “As a woman with multiple degrees, a doctorate, and a position as a college professor, I’ve fought hard for respect in society. Now, I’m being unfairly targeted.”

Nikitha clarified that she returned home after filing the complaint and was unaware of the events that followed. She dismissed accusations of fraud against her and her family as politically motivated, noting that her father, a retired officer, faced unrelated allegations in 2011. “I’m a professor in Dindigul, currently on leave to care for my bedridden mother,” she added, refuting claims of connections to influential figures, including Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. “I don’t know any senior officials or the Chief Minister. This is a smear campaign by those with political agendas.”

Addressing Ajith Kumar’s family, she said, “I must apologise repeatedly to his mother for what happened. This is a painful time for me, but silence doesn’t mean guilt.”

The controversy has left the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government under intense scrutiny, with Chief Minister Stalin, who oversees the Home portfolio, facing sharp criticism from opposition parties. Five policemen have been suspended, and a departmental inquiry is ongoing. Meanwhile, Nikitha’s home was found locked and deserted, with police noting multiple pending fraud cases against her.

Opposition leaders are demanding justice for Ajith Kumar and an end to custodial violence, accusing the government of failing to curb such incidents. As protests continue, the case remains a flashpoint in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
