Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026: NDA Alliance Pact Finalized, Seat Distribution Announced
The NDA alliance confirms seat distribution for Tamil Nadu's April 23 assembly election.
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Monday finalised its seat-sharing arrangement for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections, with key allies agreeing on the distribution of constituencies ahead of the April 23 polling date. The agreement marks a crucial step in consolidating the alliance’s strategy as it prepares to challenge the ruling front in the state.
Under the deal, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam will contest 178 of the total 234 seats, retaining the lion’s share within the alliance. The Bharatiya Janata Party has been allotted 27 seats, while the Pattali Makkal Katchi will contest 18 seats. The Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam has been given 11 seats as part of the arrangement.
The agreement was formally signed at the AIADMK headquarters in Chennai in the presence of senior alliance leaders, including AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami and Union Minister Piyush Goyal, who is also overseeing the BJP’s election strategy in the state. Other prominent leaders present included BJP Tamil Nadu chief Nainar Nagenthran, PMK President Anbumani Ramadoss, and AMMK General Secretary TTV Dinakaran.

The AIADMK’s decision to contest the majority of seats reflects its ambition to regain political dominance in the state. The party had previously contested 179 seats in the last assembly elections, winning 66, and is now aiming to improve its performance significantly. Party leaders have indicated that the strategy is focused on securing a standalone majority, which explains the emphasis on retaining a larger share of constituencies within the alliance.
For the BJP, the allocation of 27 seats represents an increase from its previous contest of 20 seats in the 2021 elections, where it secured victories in four constituencies. Reports had suggested that the party was aiming for around 30 seats in the current negotiations, but the final agreement reflects a compromise within the alliance framework while still expanding its electoral footprint in the state.
Polling for the 234-member Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly will be conducted in a single phase on April 23, with counting of votes scheduled for May 4. The elections are expected to witness a closely contested battle, particularly between the NDA and the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led alliance, making the seat-sharing pact a significant development in shaping the political landscape ahead of the polls.
