Suvendu Adhikari Takes Oath As Bhabanipur MLA After Giving Up Nandigram Seat
Suvendu Adhikari becomes Bhabanipur MLA after leaving Nandigram.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday announced that he will retain the Bhabanipur Assembly seat and resign from the Nandigram constituency after winning both seats in the recently concluded state elections. The decision was made in accordance with election rules that prohibit a legislator from holding membership in two Assembly constituencies simultaneously.
Speaking to reporters, Adhikari said he had already taken oath as an MLA from Bhabanipur and would formally vacate the Nandigram seat, paving the way for a bypoll in the constituency. He added that a representative would later be elected from Nandigram to fill the vacancy created by his resignation.
The Chief Minister noted that while he would no longer serve as the MLA from Nandigram, he remains committed to fulfilling all development-related promises made to the people of the constituency. He assured residents that his absence in the Assembly would not affect ongoing and planned welfare initiatives in the region over the next five years.

Adhikari also emphasised that his focus would remain on delivering governance commitments across the state, including Bhabanipur, which he has chosen to represent in the Assembly. He described the decision as procedural and in line with constitutional requirements governing dual victories in legislative elections.
The development follows a broader pattern seen in Indian elections, where candidates contest multiple constituencies and later retain one seat while resigning from the other. Similar instances have been observed in other states as well, where elected leaders vacate one constituency to comply with electoral norms. With the resignation from Nandigram expected to trigger a by-election, the Election Commission will now initiate the process to elect a new MLA from the seat in the coming months.
