Suvendu Adhikari Comments On Governance Shift From “Ruler’s Law” In Bengal

Suvendu Adhikari says Bengal shifted from “ruler’s law” to rule of law.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday asserted that the state is transitioning from what he termed “ruler’s law” to “rule of law,” during an address at a police administration meeting in South 24 Parganas district.Chairing the meeting at Diamond Harbour, Adhikari said his government’s focus would be on strengthening administrative accountability and ensuring that law enforcement functions in a neutral and transparent manner.

He claimed that earlier governance practices had allowed political influence to override institutional independence, a situation he said would now be corrected. In a significant administrative decision, the Chief Minister announced the dissolution of the Police Welfare Board. He alleged that the body, which was originally created to support the welfare of police personnel, had deviated from its intended purpose and become politically aligned.

According to him, the board had gradually turned into what he described as a “frontal organisation” of a political party.Adhikari stated that the restructuring was necessary to restore the credibility of welfare mechanisms within the police system. He added that instances of misuse and irregular benefits had emerged over time, prompting the government to take corrective action.

A high-level committee, headed by the chief secretary, has been formed to draft a new framework for police welfare and administrative reforms within a stipulated timeframe of three months. The Chief Minister further emphasised the importance of ensuring equal treatment of citizens under the law. He said that any individual who feels wronged or harassed by police action should have the ability to directly approach the relevant police station and file a complaint without fear or procedural barriers.

Reiterating his governance stance, Adhikari said that law enforcement agencies must operate independently of political influence and remain accountable to the public. He stressed that restoring public trust in policing institutions would be a key priority of his administration moving forward. The remarks come amid ongoing political tensions in the state, where governance, administrative reforms, and allegations of politicisation of institutions have remained central themes of debate between rival parties.
