Supreme Court Likely To Hear Rahul Gandhi’s Election Commission Dispute Tomorrow
The anticipated hearing could address the dispute involving Rahul Gandhi and the poll body.
Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The petition was filed on Monday, October 12, 2026, amid growing opposition protests over alleged irregularities in the voter-list revision process. The legal move comes as the Congress-led INDIA bloc intensifies its campaign against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, demanding accountability over the exercise and raising concerns about the exclusion of eligible voters.
The petition follows a march by Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders towards the Supreme Court to raise their concerns over the electoral-roll revision. The demonstration brought together leaders from several INDIA bloc parties, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav. The opposition has alleged that the revision process could undermine electoral fairness and has called for the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar. The Election Commission, however, has denied acting in favour of any political party.
The legal action came a day after Chief Justice of India Surya Kant declined a request from Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge for a meeting to discuss the voter-list controversy and the functioning of the Election Commission. The Chief Justice reportedly said the issues were already before the court and that discussing pending cases through an administrative meeting would be inconsistent with judicial propriety. He advised the opposition leaders to approach the court through formal legal proceedings if they wished to seek relief.

The writ petition was filed through Advocate-on-Record S Prasanna and registered under diary number 64196/2026, according to legal reports. Details of the specific relief sought and the grounds raised in the petition were not immediately available. The filing is expected to bring the opposition’s concerns directly before the Supreme Court through the judicial process. The Election Commission’s response and the court’s subsequent directions will determine how the matter proceeds.
The SIR exercise has become a major political issue, with opposition parties questioning the removal of names from electoral rolls and seeking safeguards for eligible voters. The Election Commission has maintained that the revision is intended to improve the accuracy of voter lists by removing duplicate, deceased and otherwise ineligible entries. It has also said that people whose names were wrongly deleted can seek re-enrolment through established procedures. The competing claims have intensified scrutiny of the process and its implementation across states.
The Supreme Court is already considering several matters related to the SIR exercise, including questions about the revision process and the Election Commission’s decisions. The new petition adds to the ongoing legal scrutiny as political demonstrations continue in New Delhi. Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders have said they intend to pursue the issue through constitutional and legal channels, while the Election Commission has defended its procedures. The next developments will depend on the petition’s contents, the court’s consideration and any response filed by the authorities.
