Speculation Rises Over Vijay’s INDIA Bloc Entry After Joint Appearance
Vijay’s speech and Rahul Gandhi appearance fuel INDIA bloc speculation.
Fresh speculation over whether Vijay and his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) could formally align with the opposition INDIA bloc intensified after the newly sworn-in Chief Minister repeatedly emphasised “secular” politics during his first speech in office. Vijay described his government as the beginning of “a new era of real, secular, social justice,” signalling the ideological direction of his administration.
The reference to secularism was seen as politically significant because it has remained central to Vijay’s public messaging since he launched TVK in February 2024. Political observers noted that the emphasis also aligns closely with the position of the Indian National Congress, which extended support to Vijay during government formation. Congress reportedly contributed five Assembly seats to help TVK secure a governing majority in Tamil Nadu.
The growing closeness between Vijay and Congress leaders became more visible during the swearing-in ceremony, where Rahul Gandhi shared the stage with the new Chief Minister. The visible bonhomie between the two leaders immediately fuelled discussion over whether TVK could eventually become part of the broader opposition alliance led by Congress at the national level.

Sources within the alliance indicate that Congress support for Vijay was built around a shared understanding that TVK would avoid alliances with what opposition parties describe as “communal forces.” While there has been no official announcement regarding TVK joining the INDIA bloc, Vijay’s ideological positioning and his repeated references to secularism have strengthened perceptions that the party could move closer to the opposition coalition in the future.
At the same time, the INDIA bloc itself continues to face internal challenges and shifting political equations across several states. Some regional parties have shown signs of distancing themselves from the alliance, while others are recalibrating strategies ahead of future state and national elections. Against this backdrop, the emergence of Vijay as a regional political force has added a new dimension to opposition politics in southern India.
Political analysts believe Vijay’s immediate focus is likely to remain on consolidating his government and expanding TVK’s organisational structure in Tamil Nadu. However, his relationship with Congress and his ideological messaging are expected to remain under close scrutiny, particularly as national political alliances continue to evolve ahead of future electoral contests.
