Speaker Prabhakar to Decide on Esakki Subaya's Resignation Withdrawal After Budget Session

Speaker to rule on ex-AIADMK MLA's resignation withdrawal request soon.

Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar said on Friday that he was considering a representation from former AIADMK MLA Esakki Subaya seeking to withdraw his resignation from the House. The Speaker said a decision on the matter would be announced shortly, but clarified that he would take the final call after the ongoing Budget session of the Assembly. The development comes after Mr. Subaya sought to reverse his resignation from the legislature.

Mr. Subaya was elected as an AIADMK MLA from the Ambasamudram constituency in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election. He subsequently resigned his membership of the Legislative Assembly on May 26 after deciding to join the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). His resignation formally ended his tenure as the elected representative of Ambasamudram, subject to the applicable constitutional and Assembly procedures.

The former MLA has now approached the Speaker with a request to withdraw the resignation, placing the decision on his continued membership of the House before the Assembly authorities. The Speaker said the representation was under consideration and that an appropriate decision would be taken after the Budget session. Until the Speaker makes a formal decision, the status of Mr. Subaya’s request remains unresolved.

Speaking to reporters in Chennai, Mr. Prabhakar indicated that the matter would be dealt with in accordance with the relevant procedures governing membership of the Legislative Assembly. He did not disclose the reasons for delaying the decision until after the Budget session or indicate what the outcome would be. His remarks leave the final determination on whether Mr. Subaya can withdraw his resignation with the Speaker.

Mr. Subaya’s political move has drawn attention because his resignation followed his decision to shift from the AIADMK to TVK, the party that is currently in power in Tamil Nadu. His latest representation introduces uncertainty over his position in the Assembly and could have political implications for Ambasamudram. The constituency’s representation will depend on the Speaker’s decision regarding the resignation withdrawal request.

The Speaker’s decision is therefore expected to clarify whether Mr. Subaya’s resignation will stand or whether his request to withdraw it can be accepted. The matter is likely to remain under consideration until the Budget session concludes, after which the Speaker has indicated that he will announce an appropriate decision. Until then, no final determination has been made regarding Mr. Subaya’s membership of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
