Sonowal Predicts BJP’s Third Term Triumph in Assam

BJP poised for Assam hat-trick

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has confidently predicted that the BJP-led NDA alliance will secure a third consecutive term in Assam’s 2026 assembly elections, citing the opposition INDIA bloc’s lack of grassroots support. In an exclusive PTI interview, the former Assam Chief Minister dismissed the Congress-led alliance’s influence, stating, “The INDIA bloc is good for media hype but has no workers at the grassroots level.”

Sonowal, currently the Union Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Minister, criticized the Congress for its 55-year rule, claiming it delivered negligible development compared to the transformative progress under PM Narendra Modi’s 11-year leadership. “The NDA has brought all-round development, and people feel indebted,” he said, emphasizing public trust in the BJP for Assam’s peace and progress.

On the Congress’s appointment of Gaurav Gogoi as state chief, Sonowal asserted it would fail to revive the party’s fortunes. He also questioned the opposition’s credibility, accusing them of neglecting Northeast development, including inadequate infrastructure like bridges over the Brahmaputra and railway connectivity to cities like Aizawl and Gangtok. “Congress indulged in corruption, communalism, and conflict, putting the Northeast’s potential into darkness,” he alleged, contrasting this with Modi’s focus on the region’s growth.

Addressing his potential return to state politics, Sonowal remained non-committal, prioritizing party directives over personal ambition. “It’s nation first, party second, self last. The party will decide my role,” he said. Refuting opposition claims of corruption in the current BJP government under Himanta Biswa Sarma, Sonowal called them baseless, defending the administration’s integrity.

With Assam’s elections slated for March-April 2026, Sonowal’s confidence underscores the BJP’s strong foothold, bolstered by alliances with AGP and UPPL.
