Sonia, Priyanka Lead 10th Day of Protest Against EC

Opposition demands rollback of Special Intensive Revision

Congress parliamentary party chairperson Sonia Gandhi, accompanied by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other INDIA bloc leaders, led a strong protest near Parliament’s Makar Dwar on Tuesday against the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in Bihar. The demonstration, which has entered its tenth day, saw participation from MPs belonging to the Congress, DMK, TMC, and Left parties, who accused the Election Commission of acting in concert with the government to manipulate the electoral rolls ahead of Bihar’s upcoming Assembly elections.

Holding banners and placards, the opposition leaders raised concerns about what they described as an attempt to disenfranchise legitimate voters. One of the prominent banners displayed at the protest read “SIR – Silent Invisible Rigging,” while others featured slogans such as “Our Vote. Our Right. Our Fight” and “Stop SIR,” signaling growing discontent within opposition ranks over the revision process.

The opposition has consistently demanded a rollback of the SIR and called for a parliamentary debate on the matter, arguing that the move undermines democratic principles and the integrity of the electoral process. The protest resumed on Tuesday after a brief pause on Monday, which was observed in respect following the demise of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren. The INDIA bloc maintains that a transparent and inclusive voter registration process is essential to ensure fair elections in the state.
