Smriti Irani Named National General Secretary Ahead of 2027 UP Polls

Smriti Irani's BJP comeback strengthens party's organisational push ahead of UP polls.

The Bharatiya Janata Party's decision to appoint former Union minister Smriti Irani as a national general secretary marks a significant change in its organisational strategy under BJP president Nitin Nabin. Irani had remained outside the party's central organisational structure after losing the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Amethi. Her return places one of the BJP's most recognisable political campaigners alongside experienced organisational leaders, including Sunil Bansal, Vinod Tawde, Biplab Kumar Deb and Satish Poonia, as the party prepares for a crucial round of state elections.

Uttar Pradesh is likely to be one of the key areas where Irani's political experience could become relevant. The BJP is preparing for the 2027 Assembly election in the state after facing setbacks in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Irani's political association with Uttar Pradesh is particularly significant because of her electoral history in Amethi. In 2019, she defeated then Congress president Rahul Gandhi by more than 55,120 votes, a victory that established her as one of the BJP's most prominent campaigners and gave her a strong political identity in the state.

Irani's connection with Amethi, however, predates her 2019 victory. After contesting the constituency in 2014, she continued visiting the area, interacting with local residents and workers and strengthening her association with the constituency. She subsequently lost Amethi in the 2024 Lok Sabha election to Congress candidate Kishori Lal Sharma by more than 1.67 lakh votes. Despite the defeat, Irani's wider political profile and campaigning experience have continued to make her an important asset for the BJP, allowing the party to deploy her beyond the boundaries of a single constituency.

Her appointment also brings a different profile to the BJP's national general secretary team. Bansal is known for his organisational work in Uttar Pradesh, while Tawde and Poonia have extensive experience in managing party organisations and state-level political operations. Irani, by comparison, brings a high public profile, extensive campaigning experience and a direct communication style. The combination of organisational machinery and a prominent political face could help the BJP as it seeks to rebuild momentum and shape its electoral narrative in Uttar Pradesh.

Women voters are another factor that could increase the importance of Irani's role. The BJP has increasingly focused on women as a major electoral constituency through welfare programmes and direct-benefit initiatives. As a prominent woman leader, Irani can communicate these political messages directly to voters, while her social media presence gives her access to younger and digitally engaged audiences. Her reputation as a sharp and combative speaker could also make her useful in campaign settings where the party seeks to respond directly to political opponents and shape public debate.

Irani's return therefore represents more than a routine organisational appointment. She is the only woman among the BJP's eight national general secretaries in the new team, while six women have also been appointed among the 13 national vice presidents. Her comeback places a familiar political face at the centre of the BJP's national election machinery at a time when the party is preparing for important electoral battles. With her Uttar Pradesh connection, campaigning experience and prominence among women and younger voters, Irani's new role could become an important component of the BJP's strategy ahead of the 2027 Assembly election.
