Siddaramaiah Engages in Playful Vegetarian Banter During Breakfast Meeting With DKS

Siddaramaiah jokes with a vegetarian reporter during DKS's breakfast meeting amid Karnataka leadership speculation.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar continued their public display of unity on Tuesday with a second breakfast meeting in four days, this time at Shivakumar’s private residence in Bengaluru, amid growing speculation about a leadership change in the state.

The menu itself became the talking point when reporters asked Siddaramaiah about the difference between the two meals. He revealed that Saturday’s breakfast at his home had been purely vegetarian to suit Shivakumar’s dietary preferences, while Tuesday’s spread featured authentic nati koli saaru (country chicken curry) and fry. “I specifically asked DK to arrange real village chicken—the original, high-quality one,” the Chief Minister said with visible satisfaction.

The light moment peaked when a woman journalist enquired about the contrasting menus. Siddaramaiah asked whether she ate non-vegetarian food. Upon hearing that she was a “pure vegetarian” who didn’t even consume eggs, he shot back with a mischievous grin: “Then it’s of no use.” The quip instantly went viral, drawing both laughter and playful criticism on social media.

Behind the banter lies a serious political backdrop. The Congress government crossed the halfway mark of its five-year term last month, reigniting demands from Shivakumar’s supporters that he should now take over as Chief Minister under an alleged rotational arrangement agreed upon in 2023. Both leaders have repeatedly denied the existence of any such formula, but the speculation refuses to die down.

Siddaramaiah used the opportunity to firmly dismiss any rift, declaring that he and Shivakumar are “completely united” and will continue to run the government together. “Whatever the high command decides, both of us will accept. So far, there has been no communication from Delhi on any timeline,” he told reporters after the meal.

The carefully choreographed breakfast diplomacy—complete with shared meals, jokes, and joint media interactions—appears designed to project stability and douse rumours of internal discord, even as pressure mounts within the party for a decision on Karnataka’s political future.
