Shinde’s Rising Strength Reshapes BJP–Shiv Sena Alliance Dynamics In Maharashtra
Shinde’s rising influence impacts BJP–Shiv Sena alliance dynamics.
A major political realignment appears to be unfolding within Maharashtra’s Shiv Sena camp, with six Members of Parliament from the Shiv Sena (UBT) set to formally join the Eknath Shinde-led faction. The MPs have already submitted a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and their crossover is expected to be completed in the coming days, marking a significant shift in the state’s political balance. The development is expected to strengthen the Shinde-led Shiv Sena in the Lok Sabha, taking its strength to 13 MPs. This would place it on par with the Congress’ tally in Maharashtra, which also stands at 13 seats following the 2024 general election.
At the same time, the BJP’s position in the state’s parliamentary arithmetic would slip to third place with nine MPs, altering perceptions of internal dominance within the ruling Mahayuti alliance. Political observers note that the shift could have implications for the power dynamics between the BJP and Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena. While the BJP remains the dominant force in Maharashtra’s legislative assembly following its strong performance in the 2024 state elections, the parliamentary numbers now give Shinde greater bargaining leverage at the national level, particularly in cabinet representation and alliance negotiations.
Reports suggest that the BJP may have supported the realignment, with internal discussions pointing to strategic calculations ahead of upcoming legislative priorities in Parliament, including sensitive constitutional and governance-related proposals. The expansion of Shinde’s parliamentary strength is also expected to fuel renewed discussions over cabinet representation, where his faction currently holds limited influence despite its electoral presence. The political shift comes amid long-standing tensions within Maharashtra politics over leadership roles, seat-sharing arrangements, and factional legitimacy following the original Shiv Sena split.

The latest crossover of MPs is seen as one of the most significant post-election developments, potentially reshaping not only parliamentary equations but also ground-level organisational structures ahead of future elections. Analysts point out that the Shinde faction has been steadily consolidating its position since the split, with strong performances in municipal and local body elections in key regions such as Thane and Kalyan-Dombivli. The current move is expected to further strengthen its organisational reach, particularly in urban constituencies and parts of rural Maharashtra.
At the same time, the development has raised questions about its impact on the Shiv Sena (UBT) led by Uddhav Thackeray, which faces another setback in parliamentary representation. The shift also reflects ongoing fragmentation within regional parties in Maharashtra, where internal divisions have increasingly influenced electoral outcomes and alliance structures. With the formal merger process pending approval from the Lok Sabha Speaker, the political implications are expected to unfold further in the coming weeks. Observers say the move could trigger additional negotiations within the Mahayuti alliance, especially regarding seat-sharing, ministerial allocations, and preparations for future elections, including the 2029 electoral cycle.
