Shashi Tharoor Questions Delimitation Plan in Lok Sabha Debate

Opposition questions delimitation plan, raises concerns over federal balance.

Opposition leaders raised sharp concerns in the Lok Sabha on Friday over the Centre’s proposed bills linked to delimitation and women’s reservation, with Shashi Tharoor warning that the exercise could amount to “political demonetisation". Speaking during the special parliamentary session in New Delhi, the Congress MP cautioned that the move, if rushed, could undermine national unity rather than strengthen it.

Tharoor criticised the government for what he described as a hurried approach, drawing parallels with the 2016 demonetisation exercise. He argued that delimitation—redrawing electoral constituencies—requires careful thought and broad consensus, not speed. According to him, such a significant structural change in representation should not risk creating divisions in a country already marked by regional and demographic diversity.

Highlighting key concerns, Tharoor pointed to three major “fault lines” in the proposal: the balance between smaller and larger states, disparities between southern states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala that have successfully controlled population growth, and northern states that have not met similar benchmarks. He questioned whether the proposed changes would unfairly disadvantage states that adhered to national population control goals.

Other opposition leaders echoed similar apprehensions. DMK MP Kanimozhi described the linking of delimitation with women’s reservation as a "trap", while Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav questioned whether the Centre’s intent was genuine empowerment of women or political gain. Together, the Opposition’s criticism signals growing resistance to the proposed reforms, setting the stage for further debate as the Bills move forward.
