Senior Congress Leader Anand Sharma Lauds India’s West Asia Handling Amid Party Disagreement

Anand Sharma praises India’s handling of West Asia crisis, exposing a rift within Congress leadership.

Senior Congress leader and former Union minister Anand Sharma’s commendation of the BJP-led government’s handling of the West Asia crisis has highlighted differences within the party, drawing a measured response from Congress leadership. Sharma lauded India’s diplomatic efforts as “mature and skilful,” saying they helped the country navigate “potential minefields” amid rising tensions in the region.

Sharma’s remarks came shortly after Congress MP Shashi Tharoor sparked debate by describing India’s restraint on the West Asia conflict as “responsible statecraft,” rather than moral compromise. Sharma emphasized the importance of national unity and a measured response guided by national interest, urging India to lead efforts to mobilize the Global South and strategic partner countries toward restoring peace and stability.

This position, however, contrasts with the broader stance of the Congress leadership, which has expressed concerns over the government’s handling of the crisis. In a recent all-party meeting convened by the Centre, the party reportedly voiced dissatisfaction with India’s approach, questioning its credibility and direction. Nevertheless, Sharma stressed that India’s response must be anchored in national consensus and ongoing dialogue among political parties to ensure stability during unpredictable geopolitical developments.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh responded to Sharma’s comments by highlighting the party’s democratic ethos. “This clearly establishes that the Congress is the only democratic party in the country,” he said, underscoring that diverse viewpoints are welcome within the party. Sharma, a former commerce and external affairs minister during the UPA regime, also noted that India has historically commanded respect for its moral authority and commitment to peace, warning that global instability has serious implications for future generations.

Other senior leaders have weighed in, adding nuance to the debate. Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath criticized the government’s arrangements in response to the West Asia crisis, noting that while domestic LPG supply remains adequate, broader contingency measures appear lacking. These differing perspectives reflect a complex balancing act for the Congress, which must navigate internal disagreements while articulating a coherent foreign policy stance.

The debate within the Congress highlights the challenges political parties face in addressing international crises. While some leaders stress the need for pragmatic diplomacy and national consensus, others remain critical of government actions, reflecting the party’s ongoing internal discourse over India’s role in a volatile West Asia.
