Second Fire in Two Months at Mumbai’s Busiest Station—Miracle No One Hurt This Time

Fire at Mumbai’s Churchgate station food stall; quick action prevents injuries.

Mumbai’s bustling Churchgate suburban station was rattled once again on Thursday morning when a food stall caught fire, marking the second such incident at the station in under two months. The fire broke out around 8:10 am, likely caused by a short circuit in the stall that sells milk and ice cream.

Thanks to the swift action of MS Joshi, a train manager nearby, the fire was quickly contained before it could escalate. Joshi immediately used a fire extinguisher upon spotting smoke and flames, preventing potential injuries and major damage.

This comes just over a month after a bakery stall was destroyed in a blaze during peak hours on June 5. Churchgate, one of Mumbai’s busiest Western Railway stations, is home to numerous food stalls, raising concerns about safety protocols.

Railway officials and employee unions have praised Joshi’s quick thinking for averting what could have been a serious tragedy, as investigations continue to improve safety measures at the station.
