Sarma Marches Through Rain: Assam CM’s Jalukbari Roadshow Seeks Sixth Term

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma files nomination from Jalukbari, leading rain-soaked procession ahead of April 9 polls.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday filed his nomination papers from the Jalukbari Assembly constituency, seeking a sixth consecutive term in office. The event drew thousands of supporters, who braved heavy rain to join a festive roadshow across the city, featuring traditional Bihu dancers, drummers, and ‘gayan-bayan’ performers.

Accompanied by his wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, son Nandil Biswa Sarma, BJP’s Gauhati Lok Sabha MP Bijuli Kalita Medhi, and Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania, Sarma led a 5.6-kilometre procession from Veterinary Field at Khanapara to Hengrabari before filing at the Kamrup (Metropolitan) District Election Office. At one point, he briefly walked from Last Gate in Dispur before continuing by car.

Earlier in the day, Sarma sought blessings from his mother, Mrinalini Devi, noting on X that “auspicious occasions should always begin with mother’s blessings… her blessings always power me to continue serving Aai Asomi (mother Assam).” After filing, he appealed to voters to support BJP candidates and its allies, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), while thanking citizens for their turnout despite the rain.

Sarma acknowledged that delimitation had brought new areas into Jalukbari and said it would take time to connect with these voters. He added that due to statewide commitments, he would rely on party workers to manage much of his constituency campaign, though he and his wife would also visit key locations. He plans to address five to six meetings daily.

Regarding national leaders’ involvement, Sarma noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to address three rallies in Assam, while Union Home Minister Amit Shah may hold six to eight campaign meetings.

Sarma has represented Jalukbari since 2001, having lost the seat in 1996 as a Congress candidate before joining BJP in 2015. In the 2021 Assembly elections, he won by over one lakh votes. Polling for the 126-member Assam Assembly is scheduled for April 9, with counting set for May 4.
