Samosas to Paternity Leave: The Issues That Got Raghav Chadha Removed From Rajya Sabha Post

The AAP removed Chadha after accusing him of raising soft non-political Parliament issues.

A political row has erupted within the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) after senior leader Raghav Chadha was removed as the party’s deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha. Reacting to the move, Chadha said he felt “silenced,” claiming that his consistent focus on everyday public issues had been sidelined despite their relevance to citizens’ lives.

The party leadership, however, strongly disagreed with his stance. AAP leaders accused Chadha of prioritising “soft PR” topics instead of taking on the central government more aggressively. Delhi unit chief Saurabh Bharadwaj criticised him for not confronting the BJP-led Centre firmly, suggesting that his parliamentary interventions lacked the intensity expected in current political circumstances.

Despite the criticism, Chadha has defended his approach by highlighting a range of public-centric issues he raised in Parliament. Among them was the demand for legal recognition of paternity leave, where he argued that caregiving responsibilities should be shared equally. He stressed that fathers should not have to choose between employment and supporting their families, framing it as a matter of equality and social reform.

He also drew attention to the growing traffic crisis in major urban centres such as Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai. Chadha pointed out that commuters spend up to 168 hours annually stuck in traffic, calling for a “National Urban Decongestion Mission” that would include better public transport systems, scientific parking policies, and smarter traffic management solutions.

In the telecom sector, Chadha questioned prepaid billing practices, including the expiration of unused daily data and the widely used 28-day “monthly” recharge cycle. He argued that such policies unfairly disadvantage consumers, effectively forcing them to pay for 13 cycles in a year instead of 12. He demanded reforms such as data rollover and alignment of plans with actual calendar months.

On social issues, Chadha highlighted menstrual health and the lack of basic infrastructure in schools, calling it a systemic failure affecting education and dignity. He also raised concerns over high food prices at airports, referencing the government’s ‘Udaan Yatri Cafes’ initiative and urging wider implementation within secure airport areas. Additionally, he advocated for a “right to recall” elected representatives to improve accountability and spoke about the challenges faced by gig workers, including low wages and unrealistic delivery expectations.

The controversy reflects a deeper divide within AAP over political strategy—whether to focus on everyday governance issues or adopt a more confrontational approach against the Centre led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. As the debate continues, Chadha’s removal has brought internal party dynamics into the spotlight, raising questions about the balance between public policy advocacy and political messaging.
