Samik Bhattacharya Poised to Lead Bengal BJP as Sole Nominee for State President

Samik Bhattacharya is set to take the helm as the new president of the West Bengal BJP

Rajya Sabha MP and veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Samik Bhattacharya is set to take the helm as the new president of the West Bengal BJP, with no other candidates filing nominations by the Wednesday deadline, party sources confirmed.

Bhattacharya, accompanied by outgoing state president Sukanta Majumdar and Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, submitted his nomination papers at the BJP’s Salt Lake office in Kolkata on Wednesday afternoon. According to the party’s schedule, nominations were accepted between 2 pm and 4 pm, followed by scrutiny and withdrawal until 6 pm. With Bhattacharya as the only contender, his election is expected to be uncontested.

“By 4 pm, only Samik Bhattacharya had filed nomination papers for the state president post,” a senior BJP leader told PTI. “The formal announcement will likely be made this evening or tomorrow during a felicitation ceremony at Science City in Kolkata.”

The election process, initiated a day after the official schedule was announced, marks a strategic move by the BJP to strengthen its organizational framework ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. Bhattacharya’s leadership is seen as a key part of this overhaul, given his extensive experience, RSS roots, and broad acceptance within the party.

Unless unforeseen issues arise during scrutiny, Bhattacharya will succeed Sukanta Majumdar, who has served as state president since 2021 while also holding the role of Union Minister of State for Education.
