Sadanandan Master Displays Legs in Rajya Sabha, Blames CPI(M) for Mutilation

The Rajya Sabha witnessed intense drama on Monday as nominated BJP MP C. Sadanandan Master delivered a powerful speech during the Motion of Thanks on President Droupadi Murmu’s address, sparking protests from opposition members, particularly those of the CPI(M).

Master, a Kerala-based former teacher and RSS functionary who lost both legs in a politically motivated attack in 1994, placed his prosthetic limbs on the table while addressing the House. He directly accused CPI(M) members of hypocrisy, stating, “Those who are roaring about democracy in Parliament committed an attack on me 31 years ago.”

Recounting the 1994 assault near Mattannur in Kannur, Master described how a gang of assailants pinned him down and severed both his legs below the knees while shouting political slogans. He emphasized that such acts of violence undermine the democratic fabric and called for reflection on the true meaning of democracy.

The display of prosthetics led CPI(M) MP John Brittas to raise a point of order, citing House rules against exhibiting items. The Chair asked Master to remove the prosthetics while noting the need for consistent enforcement of rules regarding placards and displays in the House.

Shifting focus to the President’s address, Master lauded the vision of “Amrit Kaal” and a “Viksit Bharat,” highlighting women’s empowerment through the historic graduation of the first batch of women cadets from the National Defence Academy. He urged opposition members to prioritize national interest over political differences.

The Motion of Thanks, seconded by BJP MP Dr. Medha Vishram Kulkarni, is set to continue over 16 hours of debate in the Budget Session. Master’s nomination to the Rajya Sabha last year was widely seen as recognition of his resilience and advocacy against political violence.
