Jaishankar meets Ecuador FM, discusses trade, digital cooperation, and strengthening bilateral relations.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held bilateral talks on Wednesday with Ecuador’s Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld, focusing on expanding cooperation across key sectors including trade, agriculture, healthcare, digital technology, and capacity building. The meeting took place during Sommerfeld’s first official visit to India, marking a renewed push to strengthen India–Ecuador relations.

In a social media post on X, Jaishankar described the meeting as “fruitful,” noting that both sides discussed ways to deepen collaboration in development-focused areas. He also highlighted plans to enhance engagement in multilateral forums, signalling closer coordination on global issues. According to officials, the discussions reflected a shared interest in expanding bilateral ties beyond traditional areas of cooperation.

A key outcome of the talks was Ecuador’s decision to begin the process of joining India-led international initiatives, including the International Solar Alliance and the International Big Cat Alliance. These platforms focus on renewable energy cooperation and wildlife conservation, respectively, and are seen as part of India’s broader effort to build global partnerships in sustainability and environmental protection.

Jaishankar also welcomed Ecuador’s participation in the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, noting that the country is already part of the initiative. Additionally, both sides agreed on funding arrangements for Quick Impact Projects, which are aimed at supporting small-scale developmental initiatives that deliver direct benefits to local communities. Officials said this step strengthens the development partnership between the two countries.

Sommerfeld’s visit includes a series of high-level engagements in New Delhi, including meetings with Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, Health Minister J.P. Nadda, and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita. She is also scheduled to visit Rajghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi as part of her diplomatic itinerary.

Diplomatic ties between India and Ecuador, established in 1969, have steadily expanded over the years through institutional mechanisms such as Foreign Office Consultations and memoranda of understanding. Recent engagements, including the opening of India’s resident embassy in Quito and reciprocal high-level visits, reflect growing momentum in bilateral relations. Both countries are now aiming to diversify cooperation into emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, education, and pharmaceuticals, signalling a broader strategic partnership in the making.
