RSS Chief’s Clarification: No Control Over BJP’s Leadership!

Bhagwat denies RSS controls BJP president pick, calls delay in appointment BJP’s own matter.

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat addressed speculations about tensions with the Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, firmly denying that the RSS controls the party’s leadership decisions or operational roadmap. Speaking at a press conference in Delhi, Bhagwat responded to questions about the RSS’s role in selecting the BJP president, stating, “This is a completely wrong notion. It cannot happen.”

Bhagwat emphasized a clear division of expertise, noting that while the RSS excels in running its shakhas, the BJP, as experts in governance, makes its own decisions. “If we were deciding, would it have taken so long?” Bhagwat quipped, drawing laughter and applause, referring to the delay in appointing a new BJP president as incumbent J.P. Nadda’s tenure, extended since 2023, continues.

Bhagwat clarified that the RSS offers ideological guidance as the head of the Sangh Parivar but does not interfere in the BJP’s operational matters. “We don’t decide. We don’t want to decide. Take your time!” he said, urging the event coordinator to move on, signaling the RSS’s non-involvement in the ongoing speculation about Nadda’s successor.

Names like Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Andhra Pradesh leader D. Purandeswari, and BJP women’s wing chief Vanathi Srinivasan have surfaced as potential candidates, particularly after the party appointed unit chiefs in six states and Union Territories in July 2025. Bhagwat’s remarks come amid discussions about a possible historic appointment of a woman as BJP president, though no concrete decision has emerged.

The RSS chief underscored the organization’s broader role, stating, “We help whoever seeks help for good work,” clarifying that RSS cadres support various parties, not just the BJP, when directed for constructive efforts. This press conference highlights the RSS’s intent to maintain synergy with the BJP while dispelling notions of overreach, reinforcing that both entities operate independently within their domains.

Bhagwat’s candid dismissal of control over the BJP’s leadership selection reflects a strategic effort to clarify the RSS-BJP relationship, especially as the party navigates its organizational elections and the RSS approaches its centenary celebrations in 2025, fostering a united front for their shared Hindutva objectives.
