Row Over Rabri Devi Gifting Diamond Bracelet To Bhojpuri Singer In Patna

A political controversy has erupted in Bihar following reports that Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and former chief minister Rabri Devi gifted a diamond-studded golden bracelet to Bhojpuri folk singer Chhotu Chhalia during the birthday celebrations of RJD president Lalu Prasad. The incident has drawn sharp criticism from the ruling Janata Dal (United), which has demanded a formal investigation into the source and valuation of the jewellery item.

The dispute began after JD(U) principal spokesperson Neeraj Kumar wrote to the Bihar Police Economic Offences Unit (EOU), questioning the legitimacy of the gift. In his complaint, he sought details on the bracelet’s purchase, its market value, and whether proper documentation or receipts existed. He also raised concerns about the source of funds used for the purchase and urged authorities to examine the matter under relevant financial and anti-corruption laws.

Kumar’s letter requested an investigation under provisions of the Income Tax Act, 1961, the Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Act, 1988, and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002. Copies of the communication were also reportedly sent to the Chief Election Commissioner for Bihar and Jharkhand, the Enforcement Directorate office in Patna, and the Lokayukta, indicating the political sensitivity surrounding the issue.

The controversy centres on claims that Rabri Devi presented the bracelet as a gesture of appreciation during a cultural performance at the birthday celebration. According to JD(U) leaders, questions remain over whether the jewellery was a personal gift or if it involved undisclosed financial transactions that require scrutiny by investigative agencies.

Responding to the allegations, RJD MLC Sunil Singh defended Rabri Devi, stating that she does not typically wear diamond jewellery and that the item in question was given in a moment of enthusiasm during the event. He added that the gift was presented after the singer performed a folk song dedicated to Tejashwi Yadav’s son, suggesting it was a customary gesture of appreciation rather than a transaction requiring financial interpretation.

The incident has added to the ongoing political tensions between the RJD and JD(U) in Bihar, with both parties frequently trading allegations over governance, transparency, and public conduct. Authorities have not yet announced any formal inquiry into the matter, and further developments are expected as political reactions continue.
