RLD UP Chief Quits, Delivers Blow to Jayant Chaudhary Ahead of Polls

Rashtriya Lok Dal’s Uttar Pradesh unit president Ramashish Rai resigned from his organisational post and primary membership of the party on Friday, delivering a setback to the Jayant Chaudhary-led organisation months before the 2027 Assembly elections. Rai attributed his departure to what he described as the “divisive politics” of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.

The RLD is a constituent of the NDA at both the Uttar Pradesh and central levels. Rai accused the party leadership of supporting the BJP despite what he alleged were attempts to create social tension along caste and religious lines. His comments amounted to a direct criticism of the RLD’s continuing political partnership with the ruling coalition.

The RLD rejected Rai’s allegations and sought to play down the possible effect of his resignation. Details of the party’s response were not included in the available report. Rai’s departure, however, is politically significant because he headed the organisation’s state unit and had responsibility for strengthening its presence ahead of the coming election.

The resignation comes barely seven months before voters are expected to elect a new Uttar Pradesh Assembly. Opposition parties may use Rai’s accusations to question the RLD’s alliance strategy, while the party will now have to manage the organisational transition and select a new state chief during a crucial phase of electoral preparation.

Jayant Chaudhary moved the RLD out of the Opposition INDIA alliance in February 2024 and joined the NDA shortly before that year’s Lok Sabha elections. The decision marked a major change in the party’s alignment and brought it closer to the BJP at the national and state levels. Rai’s resignation has exposed internal disagreement over that political direction.

It remains unclear whether Rai plans to join another party or contest the Assembly election independently. The RLD has not indicated that its alliance with the BJP is under reconsideration, and Rai’s claims remain his political assessment rather than established findings. Even so, the exit of a state president gives the party an organisational and reputational challenge as campaigning for 2027 approaches.
