Rijiju Slams Rahul Gandhi’s Anti-India Remarks

Minister criticizes Rahul for echoing Trump’s economy jibe.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju sharply rebuked Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Friday for endorsing US President Donald Trump’s claim that India’s economy is “dead,” accusing the opposition leader of damaging the nation’s image. “Rahul Gandhi is not a child. He should understand that harming India’s honor is unacceptable,” Rijiju told reporters, emphasizing that even some opposition members disapprove of Gandhi’s remarks.

Gandhi sparked controversy on Thursday by alleging that everyone, except Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, knows the Indian economy is “dead.” He also criticized the BJP-led government for ruining India’s economic, defense, and foreign policies. His comments followed Trump’s announcement of a 25% tariff plus penalties on Indian goods, where the US president mocked India and Russia’s “dead economies.”

The BJP, including senior leader Amit Malviya, condemned Gandhi’s statements as a “shameful” insult to India’s progress, highlighting India’s status as the world’s fastest-growing major economy per IMF and World Bank projections. Even Congress leaders like Rajeev Shukla, Shashi Tharoor, and Karti Chidambaram distanced themselves, with Shukla calling Trump’s remarks “completely wrong” and Tharoor rejecting the “dead economy” narrative. The row underscores escalating political tensions over India’s economic narrative amid global trade challenges.
