Reports Say Iran Preparing Grand Funeral For Former Supreme Leader Khamenei

Iran prepares grand funeral for former Supreme Leader Khamenei.

Iranian authorities are reportedly making extensive preparations for a “grand” state funeral for former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to state media reports, with officials saying planning is underway after delays caused by the prolonged conflict involving the United States and Israel earlier this year. State television reported on Friday that a special headquarters has been established to coordinate the funeral arrangements, bringing together multiple government bodies and cultural organisations. Officials quoted in the report said the committee is working on logistical, security, and ceremonial preparations for what is expected to be a large-scale national event once an official date is announced.

The report comes after months of postponement of formal mourning ceremonies due to the war that erupted in late February. According to the state media account, Khamenei, who led Iran for more than three decades, was killed in the opening phase of the conflict during US-Israeli strikes launched on February 28. The war significantly disrupted governance and public events across the country, delaying earlier plans for a state funeral. A smaller commemorative event was reportedly held in April, but authorities said conditions at the time did not allow for a full national funeral. Security concerns and continued instability following the conflict meant that large public gatherings were considered difficult to organise safely, leading to repeated delays in finalising arrangements.

Khamenei’s death marks a major turning point in Iran’s political history, given his long tenure at the head of the Islamic Republic’s leadership structure. His influence spanned domestic governance, foreign policy, and the country’s regional posture across multiple decades. The current preparations are being described by state media as an effort to reflect his political significance and ensure widespread public participation. Officials involved in the planning process told state television that multiple agencies are working in coordination to manage crowd control, ceremonial protocol, and national security measures. The report added that authorities expect “widespread attendance” once the ceremony is formally announced, though no timeline has been disclosed.

The developments also come amid continuing uncertainty over Iran’s internal political transition. Reports have noted that Mojtaba Khamenei, the former leader’s son and widely considered his successor, was injured during the same wave of strikes and has not been seen in public since. His absence has contributed to speculation and limited clarity regarding the leadership structure following the wartime period. The February 28 strikes that reportedly killed Khamenei marked the beginning of a broader escalation between Iran and US-Israeli forces, leading to months of instability before a ceasefire came into effect in April. While active hostilities have largely subsided since then, a comprehensive political agreement to formally end the conflict has not yet been reached.

Despite the ceasefire, tensions in the region remain fragile, with diplomatic negotiations continuing intermittently and both sides maintaining heightened military readiness. Analysts note that the planned funeral could become a significant political moment in Iran, both domestically and internationally, depending on how it is conducted and the level of participation it draws. For now, Iranian authorities appear focused on finalising arrangements for what they are describing as a “grand” ceremony, even as the broader geopolitical situation remains unresolved. The announcement underscores how deeply the war has affected state functions and how Iran continues to manage its political and symbolic leadership transitions in its aftermath.
